In the seventh National Assembly, Gbajabiamila served as the minority leader in the House of Representatives. He served as the chairman of the House of Representatives special committee that investigated the allegations made by the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) regarding debts owing by “Zenon Petroleum & Gas Limited” and “Forte Oil Plc” totaling 140.9 billion naira (approximately $1 billion).

Following the passing of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) in August 2021, Gbajabiamila and other lawmakers were charged with accepting bribes to ensure the legislation’s advancement despite strong public opposition to some of the wording.

Corruption Allegations

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Timipre Sylva and Senator Bassey Albert Akpan of Akwa Ibom North East reportedly orchestrated payments totaling at least $10 million for legislators, with Gbajabiamila and Senate President Ahmad Lawan receiving between $1.5 million and $2 million each.
