Early Life

Paul Michael Levesque was birthed in Nashua, New Hampshire on 27, July 1969. He was a basketball player at Nashua South High School and at age 14, he wanted to look like the professional wrestlers he saw on television, Paul took up bodybuilding to actualize his dream.

After graduating from high school in 1987, he continued entering bodybuilding competitions and won the Mr. Teenage New Hampshire competition at age 19 in 1988. The first wrestling match he ever saw was in 1974 and featured Chief Jay Strongbow.

At his birthplace Nashua, Paul worked in a gym as a manager there where he met Ted Arcidid a world champion who worked in WWE at that time. Paul convinced him to introduce him to Killer Kowalski, who was at that time running a pro wrestling school in Massachusetts and was a former wrestler.

Later, Paul started Killer Kowalski’s school in Malden, Massachusetts where he relocated to stay in 1992. he had future WWF legend, Chyna as classmates then.

Career

Under the ring name Terra Ryzing, Paul Levesque made his professional debut in 1992 against Flying Tony Roy. Tony Roy was defeated. After, he emerged winner of the IWF Heavyweight Championship in July 1992 by defeating Mad Dog Richard.

Levesque signed a contract that is to expire in a year’s time with World Championship Wrestling in 1994. He faced a villain named Terror Risin’ in his first television match. Keith Cole was defeated. He quickly changed his ring name to Terra Ryzing, which he used for a few months before rebranding himself as Jean-Paul Levesque.

As part of his character’s schtick, he was asked to speak with a French accent.

Levesque met with Vince McMahon to talk about joining his league, but McMahon wasn’t interested at the time. However, not long after watching Levesque’s match at Starrcade, McMahon was sufficiently impressed to make him an offer, and Levesque joined WWE in January 1995. As Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Paul made his WWE debut.

He appeared in taped vignettes, discussing proper etiquette. Helmsley made his WWF pay-per-view debut against Bob Holly at SummerSlam.

Paul’s career reached a difficult turn in 1996, which was sparked by a conflict with Duke “The Dumpster” Droese following a defeat at the 1996 Royal Rumble’s Free for All. Helmsley emerged as the winner in the 1997 King of the Ring fight by defeating Mankind in the championship match.

D-Generation X was created that year by Shawn Michaels, Helmsley, Chyna, and Rick Rude (DX).
