He was appointed the Honorable Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources in 2002 by Obong Victor Attah, the Akwa Ibom State governor at the time. Between 2002 to 2006, he served as Commissioner for the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Local Government, and Chieftaincy Affairs.

In a competitive primary election in 2006, he stood for governor of Akwa Ibom State and won by defeating 57 other contenders to become the People’s Democratic Party’s nominee (PDP). He was elected governor in 2007 after a successful campaign with the catchphrase “let God’s will be done.”

He defeated Chief Inibehe Okorie of the All Progressive Congress (APC), who garnered 15,152 votes, and was later declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, by receiving 422,009 of the 439,449 total votes while competing on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ticket (INEC).

Akpabio was put forth as a candidate for Senate Minority Leader on July 28, 2015, by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) South-South constituency. The PDP Senate caucus subsequently supported Akpabio’s nomination, and the Senate President subsequently appointed him to office.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) beat the PDP in the national elections of 2015, taking the power away from them. Senator Akpabio resigned as the Senate Minority Leader in August 2018 after officially pledging allegiance to the All Progressive Congress.

A campaign protest was held in his hometown of Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, to commemorate his desertion. In July 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari suggested him for a cabinet position, and the Nigerian Senate looked into his candidacy. He was inaugurated as the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Minister for Niger Delta Affairs on August 21, 2019.
