Jeffrey Bezos was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 12, 1964. He is the son of Jacklyn (née Gise) and Theodore Jørgensen. At the time of Jeffrey’s birth, his mother was a 17-year-old high school student and his father was 19 years old.
In April 1968, his mother married Cuban immigrant Miguel “Mike” Bezos, after she divorced. Mike adopted four-year-old Jeffrey, shortly after the wedding, and Jeff’s surname was then legally changed from Jorgensen to Bezos.
The family moved to Houston, Texas, after mike had received his degree from the University of New Mexico, so that he could begin working as an engineer for Exxon. When he was two years old, he attended a Montessori school in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
From his fourth to sixth grade, Jeff Bezos attended River Oaks Elementary School in Houston. Gise retired early to his ranch near Cotulla, Texas, where Bezos would spend many summers in his youth.
Bezos displayed scientific interests and technological proficiency, and once rigged an electric alarm to keep his younger siblings out of his room. Bezos would later purchase this ranch and expand it from 25,000 acres (10,117Â ha) to 300,000 acres (121,406Â ha).

Career
In 1986, after Bezos graduated from college, he was offered jobs at many organizations. He first worked at Fitel. When Bezos was promoted to head of development and director of customer service, he later transitioned into the banking industry when he became a product manager at Banker Trust.
He worked there between 1988 – 1990. In 1990, he joined D.E. Shaw and Co, a newly founded organization with a strong emphasis on mathematical modeling, and was still there till 1994. At the age of 30, he became D.E. Shaw’s fourth senior vice-president.
Bezos read that the internet was growing in late 1993, he decided to establish an online bookstore. On July 5, 1994, Bezos and his wife as at then, MacKenzie, left their jobs and founded Amazon in a rented garage in Bellevue.
Bezos led Amazon to launch Amazon Web Service in 2002. That same year, rapid spending from Amazon caused it financial distress when revenues stagnated. Amazon rebounded from financial instability and turned a profit of $400 million in 2003.
Bezos launched Amazon Kindle in November 2007. In 2008, Bezos received an honorary doctorate in Science and Technology from Carnegie Mellon University, and in 1999 Bezos was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year.
In 2000, Bezos founded Blue Origin, a human spaceflight startup company, partially as a result of his fascination with space travel.
Bezos secured a $600-million contract with the CIA on behalf of Amazon Web Services in 2013. In October of that year, Amazon was recognized as the largest online shopping retailer in the world.
Bezos sent an email to all Amazon employees on February 2, 2021, telling them the transition would give him “the time and energy he needs to focus on the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, The Washington Post, Blue Origin, and his other passions.
