Sam Walton began his career journey all planned out. In the early 40s, he worked for J.C. Penney for one year and a half, he also took over the control of a general store called Ben Franklin in Newport, Arkansas.

Sam’s store was incredibly outstanding and successful, and he later opened his own shop and named it Walton’s Five and Dime.

Later in 1962, he opened Walmart Discount City, and after five years, one Walmart had expanded to twenty-four. As the saying goes, the rest is history.

During the 80s and 90s Walmart enlarged tremendously even when it came under fire for virtually eradicating local businesses in many small towns around the US.

In 1988, It also enlarged into Canada and Mexico and launched its first Walmart Supercenter in Missouri.

Walmart further enlarged by opening channels in Argentina, Japan, the UK, Brazil, India, etc mainly for the Toy department outselling Toys “R” Us in the late 90s.

The Walmart Corporation and Sam’s Club chain of membership stores have the same ownership. More than half of sales of Walmarts are eatables rather than toys, clothes, or electronics.

As of 2012, there were over,8,500 stores owned by Walmart scattered all over 15 countries.  The store has more than one or two branches in all states and Puerto Rico, with currently 2.2 million employees still owned by Walton’s family.
