Early Life
On March 26, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Martin Hayter Short was born. His father Charles worked as an executive for the Canadian steel corporation Stelco, while his mother Olive served as concertmistress of the Hamilton Symphony Orchestra.
With four older siblings, David, Brian, Michael, and Nora, Short grew raised in a Catholic family. Olive went away from cancer in 1968, two years before Charles suffered a stroke, and David sadly perished in a vehicle accident when Martin was 12 years old.
Short attended Westdale Secondary School and graduated from McMaster University in 1971 with a B.A. in Social Work. In 2001, the university bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate in literature.
His dreams for a profession changed from social work to acting after he was chosen to perform in “Godspell” in 1972 alongside Gilda Radner, Eugene Levy, and Andrea Martin (his future sister-in-law).
Career
Short wanted to work as a social worker after earning his degree from McMaster University, but after being chosen for a Toronto production of Godspell that same year, he developed an interest in acting.
His roles in other plays and television dramas, such as Fortune and Men’s Eyes, followed (1972). Through 1979, he only did work in Canada. Short played a group of young, inexperienced attorneys who worked at a Wall Street law firm in the US sitcom The Associates in 1979.
Short joined the Toronto, Ontario-based improvisation group The Second City in 1977 after being persuaded to do so by peers Eugene Levy and Dave Thomas from McMaster. He first gained notoriety when the group created the television program Second City Television (SCTV), which was broadcast for a number of years in both Canada and the US.
Along with his roles on SCTV and SNL, Short has also appeared in a number of his own television specials and series. The 1985 Showtime one-hour program Martin Short: Concert for the North Americas featured Short as the lead.
After working for a while in sketch comedy, Short starred alongside Nick Nolte and James Earl Jones in Francis Veber’s 1989 film Three Amigos, Innerspace, The Big Picture, Captain Ron, Clifford, and Three Fugitives.
He also played the memorable scene-stealing character “Franck” in the 1991 remake of Father of the Bride and its follow-up, as well as Danny Glover and Sheila Kelley in Nadia Tass’ 1991 film Pure Luck.
In 1993, Short picked up acting again, landing the title character in the Broadway musical adaptation of the Neil Simon movie The Goodbye Girl. For this performance, she was nominated for a Tony Award and won the Outer Critics Circle Award.

After meeting her at a 1972 staging of “Godspell,” Martin began dating Gilda Radnor. He started dating Gilda’s assistant Nancy Dolman in 1974, and on December 22, 1980, the two got married.
Together, the couple adopted three children: son Henry (1986), daughter Katherine (1983), and son Oliver (1986). (born in 1989). In January 2020, Marty experienced becoming a grandfather for the first time. Sadly, Nancy lost her battle with ovarian cancer in August 2010.
