Early Life

Robert Selden Duvall was born in San Diego, California on 5 January 1931. His father was a U.S. Navy admiral. The United States Naval Academy was located in Annapolis, Maryland and that was where Duvall grew up. He was enrolled in Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, and in 1953, he graduated with a B.A. in Drama.

For a year, Duvall served in the United States Army following the Korean war. In the winter of 1955, Robert attended the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre under Sanford Meisner in New York. Duvall worked as a Manhattan post office clerk while studying acting.

Career

In 1958, Duvall’s off-Broadway debut came, where he acted as Frank Gardner in George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession at Manhattan’s Gate Theater. His first television appearance was made on Armstrong Circle Theater in the episode “The Jailbreak in 1959.

He was seen consistently on TV as a guest actor in crime dramas, suspense, action, and detective during the 1960s. In 1962, Duvall’s screen debut as Boo Radley in the critically acclaimed film To Kill a Mockingbird.

From 1991 to 1995, he married dancer Sharon Brophy as his third wife. Robert Duvall married his fourth wife and long-time girlfriend, Luciana Pedraza in 2005.  Pedraza and Duvall founded the Robert Duvall Children’s Fund to assist families in Northern Argentina through renovations of homes, schools, and medical facilities in 2001.
