Babagana Umara Zulum is a Nigerian politician and professor who has a net worth of $3 million. Ever since 2019, he has served as Borno State Governor under the All Progressive Congress (APC) platform.
Early life
Babagana Umara Zulum was delivered on August 25, 1969, in Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Education
From 1975 to 1980, Babagana eventually began his primary education at Mafa Primary School. He also further to Government Secondary School for his secondary education from 1980 to 1985.
He majored a degree in agricultural engineering at the University of Maiduguri and subsequently served in Kastina State Polytechnic as a corp member.
In addition, he also attended the University of Ibadan where he also obtained a master’s degree in agricultural engineering from 1997 to 1998.
Babagana enrolled in the University of Maiduguri’s Ph.D. program in soil and water engineering in 2005, and he finished it in 2009.
Career
Babagana’s first position held was with the Borno State Civil Service in 1989 as an Assistant Technical Officer in the State’s Ministry of Agriculture.
He joined the Borno State Unified Local Government Service in 1990 as a Senior Field Overseer and later as a Principal Water Engineer.
However, Zulum accepted a position as an assistant lecturer at the University of Maiduguri in 2000, and over time, he progressed to become a professor there. For the Engineering Faculty in 2010 and 2011, respectively, Babagana served as Deputy Dean and Acting Dean.
The Polytechnic’s Rector, Babagana Umara, was chosen in 2011. He continued to lecture at Maiduguri University during this time and was appointed by Governor Kashim Shetima of Borno State Commissioner of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement in 2015, and he served in that capacity until 2018.
Politics
He won Borno State’s All Progressive Congress governorship primary on October 1 of this year.
The 2019 Borno State gubernatorial election was held on March 9, 2019, with 1175440 votes and Professor Babagana was chosen to serve as the state’s governor.
Attempts at assassination
The terrorist organization Boko Haram has attempted to kill Zulum on numerous occasions without success.
Boko Haram militants ambushed his convoy on the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway on July 29, 2020. In addition to three police officers, five individuals were also slain. [10]
Near Lake Chad, Boko Haram once more attacked Zulum and his convoy on September 26, 2020. Four civilians and 14 police and military personnel were among the reported 18 fatalities. More victims were later discovered, bringing the death toll up to 30.
The donkey on the road was spotted by Zulum’s convoy three days later, on the 29th, and it was fired upon. They were fired upon by rebels who emerged from hiding after the donkey exploded.
No one in the convoy was hurt, although a number of rebels were killed.
When Zulum was headed to meet with government representatives in Baga on November 22, 2020, his convoy came under attack. The governor was unharmed in this ambush, which claimed the lives of seven soldiers and two civilians. His meeting was postponed.

He received the title of Commander Of The Order Of The Niger (CON) from President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2022.
