Early Life
Chris Nwabueze Ngige was born on 8 August 1952. He hails from Anambra State. Chris Ngige obtained his primary and secondary education at the St. Patrick Primary School, Ogbete, Enugu, and St. John Secondary School, Alor respectively. He enrolled at the University of Nigeria Nssuka where he studied Medicine and surgery, and graduated with a degree in 1979.
Chris joined the government right away and worked intermittently in the clinics at the state house and the National Assembly. He left the Federal Ministry of Health in 1998 after serving as deputy director.
Political Career
Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige got into politics and joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He served as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Assistant National Secretary and Zonal Secretary for the South-East region of Nigeria in 1999.
He won a contentious election and became the governor of Anambra State in 2003.
Ngige contested again for a second term as governor of Anambra State on February 6, 2010. There were 25 candidates in total in that election. Following his defeat, Peter Obi won the election and was elected the governor of Anambra State.
On the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) platform, Ngige contested as a senator for Anambra Central in April 2011. Ngige defeated the former Minister of Information and Communications Professor Dora Akunyili of the APGA.
Following his defeat in the 2015 election, Ngige’s term as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was drawn to a close. Hon. Mrs. Uche Ekwunife was then sworn in as the senator representing the Anambra Central Senatorial District in the current 8th National Assembly of Nigeria.
Ngige was appointed minister of labor and employment by President Muhammadu Buhari on November 11th, 2015. President Muhammadu Buhari nominated Chris Ngige as a returning minister in 2019. He was sworn in by the president as the Minister of Labor and Employment on August 21, 2019.
Ngige announced his intention of running for president of the Republic of Nigeria on April 19, 2022, under the APC platform.
