Indicted for corruption while serving as the governor of Abia State, Kalu was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on July 11, 2007.

On 5 December 2019, Kalu was charged and convicted of fraud worth N7.65 billion by the Lagos State Division of the Federal High Court and given a 12-year prison term. Through his business, Slok Nigeria Ltd, he was indicted of looting the Abia State government, where he served as governor for eight years. Slok Nigeria Limited, including The Sun Publications Ltd, was not implicated in the accusations.

Orji Uzor Kalu was held in custody In Lagos’s Ikoyi prisons. When his appeal against his conviction was being approved, Orji Kalu submitted a bail plea to Lagos High Court in December. The court denied his motion for release on December 23 due to lack of merit.

He was freed from prison on 8 May 2020, and a new trial was ordered by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which found that his trial had been improperly conducted.

According to the report, Judge Eko stated that Justice Mohammed Idris, who found Mr. Orji Kalu guilty, was already a justice of the Court of Appeal when he arrived at the verdict and sentenced Mr. Kalu and his co-defendant as a trial judge.

He ruled that a Justice of the Court of Appeal is ineligible to serve as a judge of the Federal High Court and asked the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to reassign the case for trial. On 3 June 2020, Orji Uzor Kalu was released from the Nigerian Correctional Centre.
