Early Life
Mugabe was born on February 21, 1924, at the Kutama Mission village in Southern Rhodesia’s Zvimba District. He was raised alongside his five brothers and sisters and hailed from the Zezuru clan, a division of the Shona tribe.
His family was ejected from the mission settlement by Father Jean-Baptiste Loubiere, a French priest after his father got into a dispute with a Jesuit in the early 1930s.
Mugabe completed his education after the family moved back to the mission. In 1941, Kutama College extended him an offer of a spot in a teacher training program. Following the completion of his teaching degree, he started working as a teacher in Southern Rhodesia’s schools.
Later on, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Fort Hare in South Africa. There, he was exposed to Marxist ideologies and Mahatma Gandhi’s deeds during the Indian Independence Movement. Before moving back to Southern Rhodesia in 1952, he completed his bachelor’s degree in history and English literature.

He resolved to focus exclusively on activism after his speech.

He was toppled in a coup by members of his own party in 2017, and Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former vice president, took his place.
